That may seem like a silly question, but it was very relevant as we planned for our recent trip to Thailand. Then we got thinking – it’s really relevant for everyone! People THINK they know who he is – but do they really know him?
Today, many people around the world celebrate his birth, but do they know his origins? Do you?
Consider the opening words of the New Testament:
The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Matthew 1:1 (KJV)
How is he the son of David and Abraham? And what does that even mean?
Consider Gabriel’s words to Mary:
Luke 1:31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
God had promised King David that this would happen:
2Samuel 7:12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.
14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son.
And what about Abraham?
Galatians 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
Of the many promises made to Abraham, this one is most relevant:
Genesis 12:7 And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land…
This is the HEART of the Gospel message – Jesus is king because he is the son of David, and he will inherit the land promised to Abraham, forever!
This is just scratching the surface! Here’s a chart we made up for the preaching work in Thailand… please check out all the passages, and explore this VERY important aspect of God’s Word.
